One of Mallorca’s most historic golf destinations is entering a new chapter. Golf Santa Ponsa is currently undergoing a major transformation that will reshape both its clubhouse facilities and the hotel immediately beside the course. The project is expected to culminate in 2027, adding a new hospitality concept to one of the island’s best-known golfing locations.
The development is particularly significant because Golf Santa Ponsa has been part of Mallorca’s golf landscape since 1977. Golf Santa Ponsa I was the first golf course to open in the municipality of Calvià and only the second on Mallorca. Almost five decades later, the current redevelopment represents one of the most substantial changes in the club’s history.
A new clubhouse and a new 88-room hotel
The existing complex, which historically combined hotel and clubhouse functions, is being reorganised. According to Mallorca Golf Island, the original Hotel Golf Santa Ponsa structure is being converted into the club’s new clubhouse, incorporating the professional shop and the main services for golfers. A separate building alongside it is being developed as a new hotel with 88 rooms and a restaurant.
The hotel will be operated by Summum Hotel Group under The Meliá Collection, the premium hotel brand of Meliá Hotels International. Summum currently lists Hotel Golf Santa Ponsa, The Meliá Collection, among its Mallorca projects scheduled for 2027. Mallorca Golf Island reports March 2027 as the planned completion date for the wider project.
The redevelopment goes considerably further than simply providing accommodation next to a golf course. Plans announced for the hotel include a fine-dining restaurant, a rooftop bar with panoramic views, a spa, several swimming pools and meeting facilities. The architectural concept is being developed by Alejandro Palomino and is intended to combine contemporary design with traditional Mediterranean elements and the surrounding Mallorcan landscape.
A historic Mallorca golf course
Golf Santa Ponsa I remains one of Mallorca’s most recognisable championship courses. Designed by Folco Nardi with the participation of Pepe Gancedo, the 18-hole, par-72 course measures 6,543 metres from the white tees and extends across approximately 73 hectares. Its 590-metre 10th hole is one of the longest par fives in Europe.
The course also occupies an important place in Mallorca’s professional golf history. Golf Santa Ponsa states that the venue has hosted the European Tour seven times, attracting players including Severiano Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, José María Olazábal, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie, Ian Woosnam and Vijay Singh.
That history gives the current redevelopment particular relevance. Rather than creating an entirely new golf resort, the project is modernising a destination that has been closely associated with golf in southwest Mallorca since the late 1970s.
Why the project matters for golf holidays in Mallorca
For visiting golfers, the combination of accommodation, upgraded clubhouse facilities and direct access to Golf Santa Ponsa I could make the location significantly more attractive for future golf holidays. Staying immediately beside the course removes one of the practical issues involved in organising a multi-day golf trip and creates the possibility of combining golf, dining, wellness and accommodation within one resort environment.
The location is also particularly convenient for golfers who want to explore more than one course. Golf Santa Ponsa lies in the southwest of Mallorca, approximately 20 kilometres from Palma and around 30 kilometres from Palma de Mallorca Airport according to the club. The wider Calvià and southwest Mallorca area contains several other established golf courses, making Santa Ponsa a practical base for a varied golf holiday.
Part of a wider move towards higher-value tourism
The companies behind the hotel have also positioned the project as part of a wider move towards higher-quality and less seasonal tourism in Santa Ponsa. Meliá and Summum have specifically highlighted the combination of sport and upscale hospitality as an important part of the concept.
This approach fits particularly well with golf tourism. Mallorca’s main golf seasons extend well beyond the traditional summer holiday period, with spring and autumn among the most attractive times of year for international golfers. A hotel built around a major golf facility therefore has the potential to attract guests during months when Mallorca is considerably quieter than during the peak beach season.
What golfers should expect in 2027
The latest information points towards 2027 as the key year for the new Golf Santa Ponsa hospitality concept. Summum Hotel Group confirms the hotel as a 2027 project, while Mallorca Golf Island currently gives March 2027 as the target for completion. As with any major construction project, travellers planning specifically around the opening should check the latest information before booking.
For Golf Santa Ponsa, however, the direction is already clear. A historic Mallorca golf club is being repositioned for a new generation of golf travellers while retaining one of the island’s most established championship courses at the centre of the experience.
For golfers planning a future stay in southwest Mallorca, Golf Santa Ponsa will therefore be a development worth watching closely. The combination of its long tournament history, upgraded club facilities and a new hotel under The Meliá Collection could make 2027 one of the most important years for the resort since the course first opened in 1977.
